Blackcurrant, Ribes nigrum, is a small shrub with an upright habit that grows wild in forests and hedgerows in nutrient-rich, moist soil but is also quite common in Danish gardens. The shrub's leaves are green and serrated and the fruit is black.
Blackcurrants typically flower in late April, with the flowers appearing in long clusters on the shrub's brown branches. The flowers are bell-shaped with a green exterior and a reddish interior.
The berries are ripe for eating in July–August, have smooth skin and a persistent calyx.
