Beskrivelse

The chimpanzee is the animal in nature most similar to humans. They live in groups and guard territories they defend against other groups. When forests are converted into farmland, chimpanzees' habitats disappear and the species has therefore become endangered.

In the wild, chimps eat termites, which they collect from termite mounds using blades of grass. They also enjoy fruit, seeds, nuts, flowers and various leaves.

Outside captivity chimpanzees live about 40–50 years, while in zoos they typically live up to 60 years.

A fully grown male weighs between 43 and 60 kg, while a female weighs 33–47 kg.

Chimpanzees are pregnant for 8 months and give birth to only one infant at a time.

The chimpanzee's hands and fingers closely resemble those of humans. The thumb is opposable, they have nails instead of claws, and their fine motor skills are as good as humans'. A chimpanzee can walk on its hind legs and pick fruit from trees with its hands, and can pick up even the smallest item using the "pincer grip" between thumb and forefinger. Hands are also used when offspring and other monkeys in the group groom each other. When two chimps greet each other friendly, they reach out their hands to touch.

All art prints in the zoo series are also available in A4
