The peacock, Pavo cristatus, is a pheasant species that, with its blue body and long tail feathers, is one of the most spectacular gallinaceous birds — visible from feet to beak. The male in particular is known for its magnificent tail, which he raises and spreads like a fan when he wants to show off and court the female. He emits a loud “kee-ow” call to make himself noticed.
During the breeding season the male dances and shakes his large, outspread tail, which is both heavy and cumbersome to carry while searching for the right mate. Once this is over, the male sheds his beautiful feathered tail, which then grows back for the next breeding season.
The female is more subdued in her grey-brown colours.
By day the bird stays on the ground to find food, while at night it takes shelter in trees. The females build their nests on the ground, where they are very exposed to foxes and cats while incubating and when the chicks are very small. The female typically lays between 4 and 8 eggs.
The peacock's primary diet is seeds, insects and fruit.
The bird lives primarily in India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the latter of which has the animal as its national bird.
