Denmark's Oldest Garden Book

"Outstanding, thorough and richly illustrated book that will delight and astonish ..." – Review, DBC

"Can definitely be recommended, even for people without a garden." – Nordjyske Stiftstidende

Denmark's very first gardening book, Horticultura Danica, was published in 1647 – a small, unassuming book of 129 pages plus an index, printed in gothic type with drawings of patterned beds as the only illustrations. Here you can read about how to establish a (formal) Renaissance garden and design beautiful beds, which flowers, herbs and other plants to put in them, useful garden tools, trees, grafting and much more.

Gunvor Maria Juul has gently adapted the entire Horticultura Danica into an easy-to-read edition and added commentary. She also spent several years tracking down plant illustrations in major botanical works from the same era as the author Hans Raszmussøn Block. A fascinating glimpse into the 17th century and an indispensable work for all gardening enthusiasts and garden lovers.
