The peacock, Pavo cristatus, is a pheasant bird that, with its blue body and long tail feathers, is one of the most spectacular fowl that can be seen on feet and beak. Especially the male is known for its magnificent tail, which he raises and spreads like a fan when he wants to show off and court the female. He emits a loud 'kee-ow' call to draw attention to himself.
During the breeding season the male dances and shakes his large, outspread tail, which is both heavy and cumbersome to carry while searching for his mate. After this, the male sheds his beautiful feather tail, which then grows back for the next breeding period.
The female is more subdued in her grey-brown colours.
By day the bird moves on the ground where it finds its food, while at night it seeks shelter in trees. The females build their nests on the ground. Here they are very exposed to foxes and cats while incubating and when the chicks are very small. The female typically lays between 4 and 8 eggs.
The peacock's primary diet is seeds, insects and fruit.
The bird lives primarily in India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the latter country having the animal as its national bird.
