Beskrivelse

Engelsød, Polymodium vulgare, is a perennial, evergreen herb that grows on nutrient-poor soil and is often found in open woods, oak scrub, stone walls, plantations and dune heaths where it’s shady and damp. The plant can be recognised by its 10–30 cm leathery, pinnate leaves with scattered lobes and a toothed margin. The upper side of the leaves is dark grass-green, while the underside is a light grey-green. The rhizome is sweet and has historically been used as a medicinal plant, since the plant’s rootstock contains many useful compounds and can help with ailments such as coughs and constipation.

The plant reaches about 40 cm in height and produces new fronds in May, when the leaves unfurl in a spiral.

Engelsød is a low-growing fern that grows wild in Denmark. It’s also used in ornamental gardens and works well as groundcover.
