The green frog is characterized by its black spots, green color and the narrow, light stripe that runs along its back. The frogs grow up to 11 cm, with the female being the largest. Its eyes sit close together on the top of the head, which allows it to lie at the water's surface with its eyes and nostrils just poking above.
The green frog's habitat is in and around ponds where there are woods nearby. The female lays her eggs late in the spring (typically at the end of May) in clumps of 20–1,000 eggs. The frog needs the warmest water and lots of aquatic plants, since the eggs attach to them. During a breeding season the female green frog can lay between 3,000 and 8,000 eggs.
In the green frog only the male has vocal sacs. These sit behind the corner of the mouth and range from whitish to dark gray. During the breeding season you can hear its croak both day and night.
The green frog hibernates on land and in the water. This happens around September.
