Common pansy, Viola tricolor, is an annual to biennial herb that grows in poor arable soil, on beach areas, among dunes, in gravel pits, on road verges and in fields. The pansy can be recognized by its large, leaf-like and short-stalked basal leaves and its somewhat spectacular flower head, which consists of a lower petal (often whitish–pale blue with a yellow base and dark-blue nectar lines), two middle petals (typically light blue with dark-blue nectar lines) and two upper petals, which are often dark blue to deep purple. The leaves are long-stalked with a truncate to cuneate base.
The common pansy blooms from May to September. The plant grows to about 25 cm tall.
