Beskrivelse

The red fox is common and widespread in Denmark. It belongs to the dog family, like the wolf and the jackal.

The fox is characterized by its triangular head, pointed snout, reddish-brown fur and bushy tail with a white tip. The ears are triangular, often black and relatively large.

The animal's food mainly consists of mice, birds, eggs, hares and rabbits, but it will occasionally eat fruit, mushrooms, carrion and household waste.

The male is the larger and can be up to about 40% bigger than the female. He weighs around 8 kg while the female weighs only about 5–6 kg. An adult male fox measures approximately 110 cm from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail.

The preferred habitat for the fox is a varied mosaic landscape where it can search for food across different types of terrain.
Like the badger, the fox is a family animal, consisting of a breeding pair, their offspring and sometimes females from previous litters.

The fox is pregnant for 53 days and gives birth to litters of 4–8 pups. When the pups are about 30 days old, they start to leave the fox den. As a burrowing animal, the fox digs long tunnels underground where it spends most of the day. The fox is most active at night, but when the female needs to find food for her young, she can be seen out in the middle of the day.
