FROGS, TOADS AND SALAMANDERS - Poster A2

Amphibians can be recognized by their thin, soft, and moist skin. They live on land and in freshwater but breed and lay eggs in water. Unlike reptiles, amphibians don’t have scales and their eggs have no hard shell to protect against drying out. Frogs’ body temperature is also variable, unlike mammals and birds.

In Denmark there are 14 species of amphibians, which include frogs, toads and salamanders.

Frogs are easiest to observe in spring when they breed in ponds.
The common toad (Skrubtudsen) can be seen in the water around April but is otherwise found in beds and gardens, where they feed on invertebrates.
Salamanders live in water during spring and summer, after which they go ashore to overwinter. Salamanders are only active at night and in damp weather.

With this poster you can recognize frogs, toads and salamanders by their markings and colors.
Take the poster with you when you go out to look at life in and around ponds and see if you can identify some of them.

Michael Petersen is responsible for the beautiful illustrations on the poster.
