In Europe, the monasteries spread in the 11th-12th century and with them came the monastery gardens, where monks and nuns cultivated both herbs, medicinal plants and ornamental plants. With the monasteries, many new plants were introduced from southern Europe to the Nordic fauna, which in some cases has spread to nature. The monastery gardens are in many places still exciting to visit.
