JUMP INTO THE SEA

"It's not easy to look at fish - we're so out of our comfort zone when we jump into the water, and unless you're a diver, it's hard to enter the world of fish and follow their daily life" .

That's what Lars Thomas says, who has written this little practical guide for all of us who find fish exciting, but who sometimes stand at the fishmonger's and stare at a strange critter we've never seen or heard of before.

In the book, published in "The White Series", the most commonly found species in Danish waters are presented from the fish groups: walrus, sharks, rays, sturgeon, eel, sea eel, salmon, herring, shiner, king herring, walleye, codfish, longtails ) wingfish, gobies, mackerel, swordfish, flatfish, lumpfish and roundmouths.

The book is fully illustrated by Susanne Weitemeyer, who has more than 40 years of experience as a nature illustrator

The sea urchin is common in Denmark and lives on the seabed close to the coast from the North Sea to the Kattegat and the northern Sound. The animal can easily be known on the round body from which spikes protrude in many directions - a little to compare with a regular hedgehog. The sea urchin is omnivorous and lives especially on leaf tongs, rudders and algae. The animal's outer skeleton of limescale forms a characteristic fossil and perhaps you or someone you know has found one, on a walk along the beach?

This art print shows five different sea urchins illustrated from the side, top and bottom.
Lykke Bianca stands for the well-like and beautiful illustrations for the art print.

Sea lilies are a very ancient animal group, dating back to the Cambrian era. They have always been numerous in the earth's garden, where they could form entire "forests" on the seabed and become several meters high. These are typically pieces of stalk from those found as fossils, as they are very massive and the individual limestone plates in it have sat quite well together. Pieces of silver silica are very easy to recognize as they are pentagonal to round in cross section and have a characteristic five-piece inner structure. The arms and the "cup" are rarely found.

The petrified sea lilies found in Denmark originate mainly from the Cretaceous or Paleocene era, but they can also be found in the Eastern Falcon all the way back from Ordovicium and Silurian times.

This art print shows decorative sea lilies with starfish and sea urchins.
Lykke Bianca stands for the well-like and beautiful illustrations for the art print.

Far, far, far back in time, there are known examples of stone axes, where the ax is designed around a sea urchin or a clam that appears prominently in the middle of the ax. Although the Stone Age sounds very old to us, there are actually findings to suggest that fossilization is not just something we modern humans, homo sapiens, have come up with. In tombs and settlements dating back to 700,000 years before Christus, and which has been inhabited by our ancestors gay Neanderthalensis and homo erectus, many pieces of especially silverware stems have been found.

This art print, a stone-age flint ax is carefully chopped around a fossil clam. The ax is found in Norfolk, England.
Lykke Bianca stands for the well-like and beautiful illustration for the art print.

The art print is printed on matte and strong quality paper from the house's own printer.
