Blackberry, Rubus plicatus, is a branching shrub with thorny shoots. The leaves have serrated edges and the flowers are white, pink or red with five petals. As the shrub grows, it sends out long canes that form a dense thicket. Blackberries prefer forest edges and other vegetation in field margins, along roads and hedgerows where there is plenty of light.
The berries are ripe and ready to eat from August to October, when you can pick the black, glossy fruits.
