DE SKABTE Flora Danica

Flora Danica er et af de mest imponerende botaniske værker i verdenshistorien – et storværk, der tog hele 123 år at fuldføre. Det blev ikke blot en enestående samling af planteillustrationer, men også inspirationen til det verdensberømte porcelænsstel.

Når historien om de 54 bind fortælles, nævnes ofte kongerne og de botaniske hovedredaktører, der styrede værket. Men hvad med dem, der satte stregerne, graverede kobberpladerne og omhyggeligt trykte hver eneste illustration? De kunstnere og håndværkere, der forvandlede videnskab til visuel skønhed, er alt for ofte blevet glemt.

Biologen og tegneren Jens Christian Schou bringer nu deres historier frem i lyset. For første gang afsløres også de veluddannede danske kvindelige kobbertrykkere, som fra omkring 1840 – trods en mandsdomineret verden – var med til at sætte det sidste, afgørende præg på værket, der blev afsluttet i 1883.

In this new book, illustrator and artist Theresa Jessing demonstrates how you can easily cut and assemble your own beautiful paper cuts - pine cones, fir trees, hearts, mistletoe, hyacinths, starbursts, and much more. There are paper cuts of varying levels of difficulty and user-friendly steps that can be followed throughout the book. The book includes 21 different beautiful paper cuts with templates.

The book's author, the talented artist Theresa Jessing, graduated from the Design School in Kolding. She has published several books featuring her own illustrations, text, and photos. Her beautiful paper cuts have been exhibited at the Museum of Paper Art in Hune, Sverresborg, and NIA in Norway.

The idea behind this book is not to give a complete history of the Nicobar Islands, but to cencentrate on the Danish period and provide a kaleidoscopig impression of som of the characters and events thar came to shape 100 years of Danish colonial history. The narration is based on many original documents, letters and articles.

Hjalte på Vikingetogt er den sidste selvstændige og spændende historie om en vikingdreng og hans venner - halvsøsteren og trælpigen Kuska samt fangen og fyrstesønnen Rurik.

Hjalte lister sig om bord på sin fars vikingeskib som blind passager. Da han bliver opdaget, får han en hård medfart ombord – indtil de møder jomsvikingerne og Harald Blåtands kongeskib.

There is interest in Danish colonial history and the slave deer - here is the story of an archipelago that few people today know about: the Nicobars in the Indian Ocean. The islands were under Danish sovereignty for more than 100 years ...

Why read about some distant, now almost forgotten tropical islands, which you must not visit? Because these lush islands close to the Equator for more than a century played a role in the consciousness of the Danes and in our colonial history.

The Nicobars (Fredericks Islands, East India) were occupied by Danish-Norwegian troops in 1755 with a dream of creating a counterpart to the Danish West Indies - just much bigger. But it should not be easy ... Some of the citizens who were sent there tried to do their best to make dreams come true. They would create a safe base for travel between Europe and China - and return. Often their efforts were futile. Occasionally tragicomic. But it never got boring.

The Nicobaric Islands store many accounts carried by idealism, rock faith and struggle for survival. And descriptions of the indigenous people, "Frederick's Eylenans," whom we quickly learned to toast, but never really understood. Here all the good people met: forest people, Indian sepoys, African slaves and Chinese workers; handsome Norwegians, creeping Danes, etat roots and barons; faithful servants, power officials. And missionaries who fought devils, mosquitoes and mad ants and were constantly tested in the faith; surrounded by pirates, feverish sailors and doctors who did their best but rarely had anything in the medicine box that helped. The backdrop was monarchical kings and ancient imperialists who blew out golden soap bubbles and dreamed of transforming our colony into a significant trading center, a new thriving Singapore.

The book is illustrated with contemporary connectors and photos - i.a. drawings found at the University of Kiel and samples from a collection of partially unknown photographs at the National Museum.

You can be very fascinated by quince - both by the fruits and by the trees with their beautiful flowers. Newly picked, the fruits are beautiful, but on our latitudes hard as stone, but they hide in a secret. Only when the quinces are prepared does the unique taste emerge.

In the Middle Ages, a true army of Christian monks and nuns arrived in the North from Central and Southern Europe. Some of them were vegetarians - something very new in time. The vegetarian lifestyle made it natural for these monks to grow well-stocked kitchen gardens.

Self-sufficiency with medicinal plants was also important. The monasteries ran hospitals and needed large quantities of good quality herbs.

Over 100 monasteries were built in Denmark, many of them having medicinal plant gardens. Unfortunately, none of these monastery or manor gardens have been preserved for posterity. But at monasteries and in medicinal gardens you can still see a large number of the medicinal plants that monks and nuns brought to Denmark.

The book contains portraits of a number of important monastic plants that have been used and some that are still used as medicinal plants.

Author of the book, Gunvor Maria Juul, is a food historian and herbal specialist. She has been an advisor at the construction of the medicine garden at the Science Musserne in Aarhus as well as the herb garden in Gråsten.

Kirsten Engholm, gartner i Orangeriet i Fredensborg Slotshave, har arbejdet med orangeriplanter i mere end 20 år og det er i dag blevet hendes passion. Fredensborg Slotshaves orangerie er et af de få, der drives som et herskabeligt 1700-tals orangeri, hvor der dyrkes ældgamle baljeplanter, der plejes og passes som kongelige klenodier.
