The amaryllis may be the most impressive flower. And precisely impressive — there are no refinements to get lost in, only amazement and admiration. Fleshy and pearlescent, on stems that defy any physical law. We buy them by the tens of thousands every autumn, and especially for Christmas.
You buy them in that strange stage where a huge, proud bulb is about to burst under the pressure from one or more flower stalks pushing up. You wait, and after weeks of waiting the bud breaks, now sitting up to a metre high, and the almost cheeky flowers unfold over a few days. The finest specimens have four flowers, and the flower was once called "the four corners of the world." If you’re lucky and the bulb is large, you get 2 or 3 flower stalks from each bulb. Gradually the long leaves appear, sometimes at the same time, but usually after the flowers. It’s quite a show.
