LIGHTHOUSES (FYRTÅRNE) - Poster A2

Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines and safe entries to harbors. A lighthouse is a tower, building or a kind of structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps. It works as a navigational aid at sea or on inland waterways.

The Danish light houses are spread over the coast lines in all of Denmark and there are at least 225.
The first one eas build in 1560 and the light source came from wood. Between 1600-1700 they used fish liver and animal fat to lit up the light houses.

Most of the old lighthouses is no longer for use because of more modern and effective electronic navigational systems.

The lighthouses at the poster is illustrated by danish artist Peter Nielsen.
